Organization Climate refers to a set of six measurable dimensions of the perceived work environment: Conformity, Responsibility, Standards, Rewards, Clarity, and Sense of Team. Together, these dimensions have been researched and proven[1] to influence the motivation and behavior of the people working within the organization.

The simple goal of an OCA is to answer the question, “What is it like to work in this place at this time and under this leader?” For example: Is the environment one that is motivating or de-motivating, achievement-driven or burned-out?

SSCA’s Organization Climate Assessment (OCA) assesses six key dimensions of a work environment. These six dimensions can either arouse motivation and sustain productivity — or derail both.

Organization Culture is your company’s identity. It’s the values and norms that have arisen organically over time. It’s the way a company makes decisions and how the people operate. Organization Climate is a subset of Culture, a smaller component within the organization that’s directly controlled or created by the leader and demonstrates what it’s like for people to get their jobs done within the culture.

Climate is a critical focal point for leadership. It is the area where leaders have the greatest leverage to impact their organization’s performance. It is a guideline for leaders to measure their impact and success. The Climate of an organization affects each individual who works within it and, therefore, the organization’s performance as a whole.

The OCA begins a dialogue that will empower both the leader and their direct reports to influence the Climate in a positive direction. After all, it is not only the leader whose behaviors and practices affect the work environment. Employees also share responsibility for creating a healthy and motivating environment. Your report will include action plans for each aspect of Climate. We encourage you to openly share the report with your team and to create a dialogue for a positive Climate.

Once you’ve entered the names and email addresses of your team members, SSCA will send an email invitation to the assessment from lyra@ssca.com (Subject Line: Leadership Assessment Invitation).

Through a two-part survey, the OCA asks responders to consider their perception of the current work environment (Part I) and how they imagine their preferred environment (Part II). When all responses are aggregated, we have a strong reflection of how the leader’s behaviors and practices are impacting the organization’s Climate.

We recommend allocating 20-30 minutes to complete the assessment.

OCAs are time-relevant because the perception of the work environment is time-relevant. We recommend processing an OCA every 3-6 months to check how things are going within your team.

SSCA takes the confidentiality of responses seriously; we never share individual responses. Rather, we generate a composite of all responses in order to protect the anonymity of the individuals who have responded. The OCA is a safe and reliable outlet for candid thoughts and frank opinions.

Your final, multi-page report will include:

1. 1. The definition of each Climate dimension.
   2. Tips for how to achieve strong scores in each dimension.
   3. The ideal score range for each dimension.
   4. The aggregated score for each dimension, calculated from your team’s current perception of the work environment.
   5. The aggregated score for each dimension as calculated from your team’s preferred environment, which may or may not reflect what is statistically ideal.
   6. What the difference between these scores tells you as the leader.
   7. A graph and accompanying explanation of common shapes that Climate graphs can take and what they mean for you.
   8. A self-propelled Action Plan, with questions to get you started.
